Work Detail: Windows on Main Street 2013
Why should we be so busy in August? We smooth over the summer doldrums by helping to put on a great community art project here in Beacon, Windows on Main Street. Each summer, several dozen artists install site-specific art in the retail storefront windows down Main Street. It’s quite an event — all sorts of different art projects. Get a load of past exhibitions on the website.
I’ve been helping organize and promote this project since 2009. Since we have no budget, of course I make all the materials as well. There seem to be more and more every year.
Each year we switch up the branding, breaking my own rule of consistency…but it is an art exhibition, a fun time to get creative. This year, the theme was aligned with Beacon’s 100th birthday: The Past, Present, and Future of Beacon. We got a little retro with the materials. Here’s the “Official Map” which will be handed out all along Main.
This will also be turned into huge banners posted in windows on each end of Main. Here’s a preview of what that will look like.
As a fun promotion, we also printed 2-sided coasters and distributed them to the bars and restaurants in town to hand out in July and August. Details about the Opening Party was also printed on them. Keepsakes!
We will also do a full color catalog of the exhibition after the work is installed this week. It’s not designed yet, but you can see last year’s catalog here.
If you’re in town, come to the Opening Party! It’s at Dream in Plastic, 177 Main Street, on Saturday night, August 10, 2013, 6-9pm. Good time guaranteed.
